General Manager Steve Staios met with the assembled media at the Canadian Tire Centre this morning where he spoke on several issues related to the Senators’ 2023-24 season.
Thanks again Graeme for your analysis. This guy is not going to show his true hand to the press. So it is reading the lines in between and you do that well. Chychrun and Korpi are likely done like dinner. They will sign some veteran R.D. in free agency. There will not be much money left over after the buyout, getting a goaltender, signing the R.D., and signing Pinto. Folks do not want to hear this, but it may take another 2 years to correct P.D.'s mess!
Potentially. I think the good news is that they have filled a lot of key spots on the roster, it's the quality of depth (especially on D) and goaltending that are needed. Unfortunately, those can be hard to fill. I think what's frustrating for me is that this team, having finished in the bottom of the league for the last 6 years should have way more assets and trade currency than they do. So many valuable assets have been moved in short-term moves that didn't work out.
I totally agree with you on that front. They have very few assets to trade with and need to restock. I love that you're a bit of an analytics geek and cover it like few journalists do. Thanks for that. On a side note, I love that Garrioch has no crumbs from this GM to out scoop the other reporters with! He has to work hard like anyone else to get his information. I will not be surprised in a few years if he retires because of that.
This guy really plays it close and I like that. PD was always trumpeting his moves and look where that got the team. Dreadful disappointing season but my hope springs eternal and I could see them taking a major step forward with the right roster tweaks and coach hiring. Great read Graham. Love your interpretations of Staios guarded opaque language.
Stu may well have had wrist issue much of the season but he needs to get mentally tough.. Teams take him off his game so easily… his posture and attitude when he loses the puck or is taken out of the play has to be more “I’ll get it back” rather than “come on Ref?”
Yeah, and I think as a young guy coming off the season he had last season, he probably put a ton of pressure on himself to live up to those standards and carry the team. He's visibly upset every time something doesn't go his way, but that's an emotional maturity thing that he can grow out of.
