What is this new endeavour?

‘Rome in a Day’ is a blog/newsletter hybrid covering the NHL’s Ottawa Senators.

Who Am I?

Graeme Nichols, a writer whose work has appeared in The Athletic, the Ottawa Citizen and The 6th Sens.

What’s up with the name?

The name of the site is an abbreviated version of the Ottawa Citizen’s headline ‘Maybe Rome was built in a Day’ that followed the Senators’ first win in modern history.

Why the pivot to Substack?

Substack gives me independent control of this site and allows me to publish content while being able to distribute it quickly and efficiently. You will never have to worry about missing a post since every new edition of the newsletter goes directly to your email. Having a clean and functional site is a welcomed change and it is an opportunity to monetize my work without having to worry about ugly third-party advertisements.

Whoa, will this cost me money?

The short answer is no. The majority of the content here will be free for everyone to read, but if you feel that there is value to my work and want to see it be remunerated, it would be incredibly awesome if you became a paid subscriber.

The plan is to write as often as I can, but subscribers will get full access to the comments section. It will allow you to ask mailbag questions, read subscription-exclusive posts, full access to the newsletter, website and podcasts.

Is there anything else?

I plan on relaunching some version of a podcast where instead of just doing a weekly Q&A session with someone, I have an actual hockey conversation with whomever I’m talking to. I haven’t delved too much into the details here, but I’m excited and happy to be trying something new that will hopefully appeal to Senators fans.
